“As always the greater battery life, sharper display and dual cameras of the iPhone 8 Plus make it the model to get if you can afford the extra outlay – but the iPhone 8 is easily going to be the most accomplished small form factor phone of the year.” – Kelly Gordon of Forbes
Apple released 3 brand new iPhones on September 12th, 2017, iPhone X, iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus. iPhone 8 and 8 Plus start pre-order started on Sept 15 and on sale on Sept 22. The iPhone 8 starts at A$1,079 while iPhone 8 Plus price starts at A$1,229
Highlight
iPhone 8 and 8 Plus have faster processors and better cameras than last year’s iPhone 7 — and now you can charge them wirelessly. It is the first iPhone to support wireless charging. Traditional Touch ID method still used on the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus. Brand-new iOS 11 software.
There are new stereo speakers at the top and bottom of the phone, and Apple says these have deeper bass, and can go 20% louder too.
While glass will have some users (rightly) concerned about durability, the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus do have the same IP67 water and dust resistance as their immediate predecessors which protects them in up to 1.5m of water for up to 30 minutes.
Design, Size and Colour
iPhone 8 | 4.7-inch display
iPhone 8 Plus | 5.5-inch display
Apple changed up the iPhone’s looks a bit this year with a glass back instead of just making the whole thing aluminum. The 4.7-inch screen is smaller and lower-res (1334×750) than the iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone X. If you like things to look big on your screen and get lost in YouTube videos or your Instagram feed, the iPhone 8’s display might not be ideal.
Comes in black, silver, or gold.
Processor
This phone has the same powerful A11 Bionic processor as the iPhone X. If you’re wondering about that processor, all you need to know is that, it’s the fastest chip that Apple has ever put in an iPhone — and the iPhone 7 already felt plenty fast.
Camera
If you’re a bit more interested about the camera, here it is!
The iPhone 8 retains a single 12 megapixel wide-angle sensor with f/1.8 aperture and optical image stabilisation. The 12-megapixel f/1.8 camera has a “larger and faster” sensor than the iPhone 7, says Apple, so if all you care about is having one good camera, this should be excellent.
While the iPhone 8 Plus adds a 12 megapixel telephoto camera with lowly f/2.8 aperture and no OIS (just like the iPhone 7 Plus). The latter two specs impacted the performance of the iPhone 7 Plus, particularly in low light.
On the front of the phone is a 7MP selfie camera that can film in 1080p and has an aperture of f/2.2.
Battery Life
Another major difference between the two new iPhones is in battery life. As can be expected, the iPhone 8 Plus packs a much larger battery because it needs it to power its larger screen. It has a 2675 mAh battery versus the iPhone 8’s 1821 mAh battery. But that larger battery in the iPhone 8 Plus doesn’t just go to powering the bigger display. It also leads to longer battery life in individual tasks.
